5 Great European Safaris

by Matt Thomas

in Europe

Say safari and people think crossing the African planes in a 4×4 hot on the trail of lions, elephants and giraffes. Turns out Europe has its own versions, here is a run down of the best European Safari’s to choose from.

Romania

Just let it be noted that Romania is Europe’s safari capital. Here, in the country’s Piatra Craiului Mountains, it plays home to around two-thirds of the continent’s bear population. Add to that a substantial presence of wolves, chamois, lynx and a great variety of bird species, and you have a safari that can match any on the African continent. We suggest checking out .

Scotland, United Kingdom

We were shocked to discover that Scotland is home to 2/3 or Europe’s sea-birds. Which not only includes seagulls, but a whole range of bird species including the iconic puffin, Manx shearwater, razorbill and the Arctic tern. Where to go? Head off to Scotland during spring and summer to catch a glimpse of these birds.

The Azores, Portugal

This collection of Portuguese islands off the coast of Europe, provides for quite the sea-safari experience, for it’s whale watching alone. The islands are smack in the middle of sperm whale breading ground, but also play host to populations of pilot whales, beaked whales and false killer whales. But that’s not it, as dolphins also regularly pop in. Expect to see bottlenose, common, spotted, Risso’s and striped dolphins just to name a few.

Coto Donana National Park, SpainAbout an hour’s drive from Seville, this park is situated on the Guadalquivir River delta, and is comprised entirely of wetlands. What makes it spectacular is the 6 million migratory birds that stop off here every year. You’ll get to see flamingos, egrets, as well as spoonbills and black kites amongst the over 250 bird species spotted here. The park is also home to a small population of endangered species like Lynx and the Imperial Eagle.

The Alps, Europe

Stretching over 7 countries (from Austria in the east, right into France) the Alps provide for a completely different kind of safari. This one doesn’t feature animals. Instead the attraction here is wildlife spotting while skiing on the endless slopes of Europe’s biggest mountain range. We suggest ensuring your travel insurer has great winter sports coverage as this is not the relaxing kind of safari. Hearts will be pumping, and with helicopter rides over the majestic views often included, breaths might be taken away too.

Big Tip: Various ski safari operators exist all over Europe. To ensure your safety, please ensure the operator you choose to explore with has fully qualified, experienced guides.
