Best road trips in USA

You could say modern America was built for the automobile. Vast highways stretch from coast to coast through valleys, over mountains, across canyons, beside lakes, marshlands and swamp. They run through deserts, national parks and of course the great towns and cities that populate this vast land. Let`s look at some road trips.

The `Mother Road` Route 66 ran from Chicago through the Midwest over to California. In use since 1926, it became the major thoroughfare for those migrating west and for the hopes and dreams they carried with them. Physically, it went through several phases of realignment over the years, including moving the endpoint from Los Angeles to Santa Monica, until 1985 when `the 66` was officially removed from the Highway System. Whilst it`s been replaced as a major route by the Interstate Highway System, it still makes for a fabulous road trip, following in the path of those who left the dust bowls behind in search of a better life.

If Route 66 was best part of 3000 miles in length, the Californian Pacific Coast Highway is a much more genteel affair running the 123 miles south from historic Monterey to Morro Rock with its landmark extinct volcano judged to be over 23 million years old. It may take a leisurely five hours to complete but you`ll twist and turn near the edge of cliffs and scenic bays against a backdrop of tree-lined hills and redwood groves. This is the other California, literally miles away from the power and energy of its major conurbations.

Try picking up Route 28 in Boston, Massachusetts and unofficial capital of New England. This corner of the United States is particularly renowned for its glorious foliage and explosion of colour during the autumn or `fall` as they prefer to say. It`s also a pretty good trip any time of the year, passing through colonial style villages once at the heart of the struggle for American Independence. Follow the road along the peninsula into Cape Cod with its quaint shops, sandy beaches and array of museums, galleries and studios just waiting to be explored. And as for seafood restaurants, there is nowhere finer.

Drive along the western coastline of Florida as it hugs the Gulf of Mexico and enjoy this magical sunshine state. Move away from the big cities into cosy little fishing villages and lazy unspoiled beaches. Wake up to a sunrise at Eurocamp Madeira Beach Holiday Park and let the day unfold in front of you.
