Spa vacations are all the rage at the moment and with more and more people looking for relaxing holidays in the sun the spa break has come to prominence. Spas have been around in Spain for more than 2,000 years. The tradition was brought to the country when the Romans colonized most of the region in the first century B.C. Along with many other traditions the Romans brought with them their penchant for bathing.

In Spain in particular the idea of the spa caught on and these bathing houses are still popular today. In fact the ancient Roman term for the building that houses public baths, balnea, is still found in Spain today. The modern Spanish word for spas is balnearios.

Today there are hundreds of spas scattered across the country, and many more spas are found on the Balearic and Canary Islands. Here are some of the many excellent spas in the country:

The Blau Porto Petro is a unique and exclusive hotel in Majorca. The five star Majorcan resort is close to the picturesque port of Porto Petro. The village is surrounded by a native pine forest and any holiday in the resort allows you to explore the two romantic coves.

The Hesperia Tower Hotel is housed in one of the tallest buildings in Barcelona. The spa itself is located in the 4,000 square metre Metropolitan Health Club and Spa. Water plays a huge part in many of the treatments, which include the use of sea water and thermal waters.

As Spain has a long history of providing therapeutic treatments for people looking for relaxation it is well worth going to visit some of the premier spas in the country. Whether you are looking for a spa holiday or are just looking for a day trip to one of the sumptuous spas, then Spain is the place for you. They have been providing spa treatments for the last two thousand years after all.
